There is a path forward
Dr. Becky Rudd has a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and over 19 years of experience working with couples. She is well-grounded in the Bowenian Family Therapy model and earned certification as a Gottman Method Couple Therapist.
The Intake Assessment
Dr. Rudd will learn more about you and your partner’s life together from how you met, to major events in your life to what brought you in for therapy. She will assessment each partner’s motivation and commitment to the relationship and desire for rebuilding the relationship. You and your partner will be invited to compete the Relationship Checkup, a comprehensive assessment of both partners and the relationship.
Over the next several weeks Dr. Rudd will meet with both partners for their individual oral history that details each person’s childhood, significant relationships, traumas or other factors that impact the relationship.
The fourth session, or treatment plan session, is where Dr. Rudd will go over the results of the thorough comprehensive assessments, interviews with each partner and provide a summary of your strengths and areas for growth within your relationship.
Some couples prefer to do these first four sessions closely together to speed along the evaluation process, whereas others are happy to complete one session per week.
Couple Therapy Sessions
Working from the identified treatment plan, Dr. Rudd will lead you and your partner through rebuilding your relationship from the ground up focusing on areas where your relationship is struggling.
- Trust and commitment
- Friendship
- Managing conflict
- Sharing your life and dreams together
Dr. Rudd will create a supportive, compassionate and safe space for you and your partner to address gridlocked problems and develop a new culture of understanding, empathy and compassion for one another. You can expect homework outside session to practice the new strategies and incorporate them into a new way of being.
How Couple Therapy Ends
Research suggests about 12 couple sessions (outside the initial evaluation process) offers couples new perspective, noticeable change in their relationship and a general softening towards one another. Dr. Rudd’s couples gradually decrease their session frequency to bi-weekly, monthly or just schedule regular tune-up sessions when the need arises.
The Gottman Couple Method was developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman.
